The goal of the Interactive atlas of Occitan intonation is to systematically present a series of audio and video materials for the study of prosody and intonation in the various dialects of Occitan. It is intended as the first step in a comprehensive study of the great dialectal diversity present in the intonation of that language. By means of interactive maps of linguistic domains, the user can conveniently access various audio and video materials exemplifying the diverse Occitan varieties. For each geographic location marked on these maps, we have included the following types of materials:

Examples of different sorts of intonation contours (around 48 contours per locale). Each set of files includes a description and interpretation of the contour, an audio file, the fundamental frequency curve and intonation contour, and Oc-ToBI labeling.
A fragment of speech obtained by means of the Map Task technique.
A videotaped fragment of spontaneous speech or an informal conversation.

This project forms part of a program of international scope that proposes a system of tonal labeling (ToBI) for different languages (http://www.ling.ohio-state.edu/~tobi/). A manual describing how to apply this labeling system to the different intonational patterns of Occitan can be accessed through this website (Cat-ToBI). The Oc-ToBI system is still being elaborated and will be available as soon as we have a satisfactory enough version.

We intend this website to be a useful tool for both research and teaching purposes. For researchers, it offers data in the form of audio materials for the study of Occitan prosody and intonation. For teachers, this site provides easy access to audio examples of intonation in different varieties of Occitan. Comparisons of equivalent contours in different dialects can also be easily performed by means of a comparative tool. Furthermore, the Oc-ToBI manual will be designed as a teaching guide that will show how to prosodically label samples of spoken Occitan. Finally, the website also contains a resource page listing specialized bibliography on intonation.
