Born in Figueres (l'Alt Empordà) in the Summer of 1965. After obtaining my doctoral degree in Romance Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I was postdoctoral fellow at Bell Laboratories (Murray Hill, New Jersey), where I started working on different aspects of the intonational phonology of Romance languages. Currently I am the coordinator of the "Grup d'Estudis de Prosòdia" at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, a group which investigates the phonology of intonation in several Romance languages, the interaction between prosody and other linguistic modules, the interface between prosody and pragmatics, prosody and syntax, as well as on the acquisition of prosody. We are also especially interested in the role of prosody and facial and manual gestures in the expression of linguistic meaning.
My main research interests focus on the description of how melody and prosody works in language and how it interacts with other types of linguistic knowledge. I am also interested in how babies acquire sounds and melody together with grammar, and how these components integrate in the process of language acquisition. In order to investigate these aspects of language, we rely on the general methods used for behavioural analysis, as well as the recording of brain evoked potentials in collaboration with colleagues from other labs.
