Celia Gorba

About Me

Celia Gorba is a postdoctoral researcher who was granted a Margarita Salas grant in 2021. Her research focusses mainly on the acquisition of second language (L2) speech. She obtained a PhD in English Philology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2020. Her predoctoral research investigated the acquisition of L2 sounds and the factors modulating it. Currently, she is part of the GrEP, as well as Juli Cebrian’s (UAB) lab on L2 speech. Her postdoctoral project investigates the acquisition of L2 prosody with an aim to determine whether the acquisition of L2 sounds and L2 prosody are ruled by similar mechanism. Moreover, her research attempts to test the main premises postulated by the most popular L2 speech models which have generally been aimed at the acquisition of individual phones and segmental contrasts.

Research Interests

  • L2 speech
  • Phonetics and phonology
  • The acquisition of L2 prosody
  • Phonetic training
