Títol: Word segmentation in German-learning infants: The role of prosody and its interaction with statistical learning
Resum: In this talk I will highlight the role of prosody in the context of word segmentation in 6- and 9-month-old German-learning infants. I will present different studies conducted at our lab using the Headturn Preference Procedure and pupillometry, showing the importance of prosodic cues for indicating word boundaries, and how these cues relate to statistical cues. In addition, I will show evidence on how word segmentation mechanisms are predictable of later language abilities.

Títol: Challenging second-language phonological contrasts in the lexicon: More than just a matter of perception
Resum: Learning a second language (L2) involves acquiring phones that are not part of the native phonological inventory. Especially problematic for learners are scenarios in which two phones that are contrastive in the L2 are perceptually mapped onto the same native language (L1) category (e.g., English /ɛ/ and /æ/ for native speakers of German). To truly be able to make use of these ‘difficult’ contrasts during speech perception, learners need to achieve two interrelated goals. First, they have learn to reliably categorize the L2 phones as two distinct non-native phonetic categories. Secondly, these phonetic categories need to be robustly encoded into the phonological representations of the L2 lexical items that contain them (i.e., lexical encoding) to increase the likelihood of an effective lexical retrieval. Crucially, the relationship between the two steps outlined above is not well understood. Most research on the topic seems to build on the assumption that improvements in perceptual categorization automatically lead to better lexical encoding and, in turn, to higher efficiency in spoken-word recognition. However, the few studies that have indeed looked into this relationship at the level of the individual have rendered mixed results, outlining a link that appears not to be as strong nor as consistent as expected. A possible explanation for the mismatches observed is that lexical encoding may be more dependent on the characteristics of one’s L2 lexicon, and the place that individual words occupy within it, than previously thought.In this talk, I present the results of some of my most recent research suggesting that the lexical encoding of difficult L2 phonological contrasts is indeed modulated by one’s lexical knowledge and the lexical characteristics of individual words. I discuss how accurate perceptual categorization is necessary but not sufficient for target-like lexical encoding and how vocabulary size is likely to be a key determiner of one’s ultimate success. In addition to this, I hypothesize that improvements in lexical encoding occur in a piecemeal manner and may be facilitated by the learning of clusters of similar-sounding words containing the target non-native phones. The implications of these findings for research on L2 phonological learning as well as future research directions will discussed.

Titol: The use of beats by children and information structure.

Abstract:
Beat gestures as a way to highlight parts of the utterance are increasingly becoming of interest. The rhythmic bi-phasic movements of the hands play a crucial role within communication. When it comes to children's speech beats are supposed to appear after the 5th year of age since they first have to learn to distinguish between the various levels of discourse (McNeill, 1992) and thus mark the element that will progress the discourse (Féry & Krifka, 2008; Krifka, 2007). Based on data of German speaking 4-year-old children collected within the EcoGest1 project, we believe that children may not employ beats in the sense adults do, but they still highlight focused constituents through their bodies. We looked at utterances containing focus particles and "unmarked" utterances and took into account the movements produced by the whole spectrum of the body. Our first results suggest that children may not employ beat movements the way adults do, but they still produce rhythmic movements while focusing in their utterances, taking up a highlighting function.

Abstract:
The talk proposes the absolute need to incorporate prosody to the pragmatic analysis of language and defends that the study of context is incomplete without the careful analysis of the acoustic elements that compose the kaleidoscope of speech. This approach is a return to the origins of discourse analysis in the late 60's and early 70's, when revered functional grammarians and discourse analysts like Halliday (1967, 1970) and Brazil (1997), inter alii, demonstrated the inextricable relationship between prosody and language functions. The way an utterance is pronounced belongs to the realm of prosody, and based on the acoustic performance of language, pragmatics can identify the intentions with which utterances are pronounced and how they may help to clarify the meaning behind some grammatical structures that do not render transparent pragmatic force. In the past, pragmaticians have rarely approached the study of meaning from a prosodic perspective as if speech were the subject matter for the study of meaning in a script, but without the realisation of that script in a context. The present talk will try to bridge the gap between pragmatics and prosody (Romero-Trillo, 2019) and will identify the main prosodic theories that can be useful for pragmatic research. The talk will also present current research in the field with specific emphasis on the prosody of pragmatic markers and emotions in English in L1 and L2 contexts.

Abstract:
Previous research found that second language (L2) experience may cause an interaction between first language (L1) and L2 categories. This study examines the effect of L2 experience on L1 and L2 stop perception. Three groups of Spanish learners of English varying in L2 experience completed a /p/-/b/ identification task - which included stimuli varying along a Voice Onset Time continuum - in each language. Results suggested that L2 experience improves the perception of L2 stops, but that it also affects L1 perception. Moreover, all groups appeared to have a shared L1-L2 category for bilabial stops, as perception patterns did not differ between languages.

Titol: Priorities for applied linguistics in today’s diverse world: focus on the communicative needs of bilingual and bilingual-to-be preschoolers and on those of newly arrived adult immigrants

Abstract:
This talk starts from the assumption that applied linguistics research should first and foremost deal with topics of high societal relevance and, if possible, find solutions for problems of societal significance. In today’s world, multilingualism is of utmost concern and importance to many. Two subtopics here that are in urgent need of more research attention in Europe today are (1) how educators deal with linguistic diversity in pre-school programs and what best practices here could consist of, and (2) how host societies can best help the many newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers in their need to learn the host society’s main language(s) as soon as possible. I will identify the main challenges in these domains, and consider them from many different perspectives. These include questions about lexical needs, teaching methods, assessment, interpreting, and the role of discourse strategies in interaction.

Abstract:
Studies of both first (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition have largely focused on the acquisition of form over meaning. Although comprehension studies indicate that language learners’ understanding is not always adult- or target-like, surprisingly little is known about the nature of the differences once forms are used in production. In this talk I will highlight what gestures can contribute to our understanding of what forms in use mean and of the development of linguistic meaning. Targeting the semantic domain of placement (e.g., put a cup on a table), I first demonstrate robust crosslinguistic differences in adult native speakers’ speech and gestures, highlighting that gestures about manual actions are modulated by language and do not necessarily imitate practical actions. Second, I show that gestures change in parallel with developing verb meaning in children and in adult L2 learners, providing details about learners’ current semantic representations. The studies support the notion that speech and gesture form an integrated system, partly decoupled from practical actions, where gestures can shed light on the process of acquisition by revealing semantic shifts. Crossmodal acquisition data have theoretical implications for the view of meaning in acquisition studies, for simplistic views of gestures as compensatory devices, and for models of speech-gesture production and coordination.

It may be that we have been looking for answers in the wrong place.It is not widely appreciated that speech breathing in young children operates in a significantly different way from speech breathing in mature speakers. Speech breathing has the potential to condition every aspect of speech production, especially during development. I will describe how an understanding of speech breathing in children is needed to complete the arguments for phonological approaches to speech ‘rhythm’ and accounts for some other speech timing phenomena.
