Goals

This course is intended to be a practical tool for learning how to prosodically label Catalan speech data. It is accessible to a fairly wide audience, without assuming any background in linguistics or speech sciences. It is especially appropriate for undergraduate or graduate students with a background in linguistics (phonology or phonetics), cognitive psychology (psycholinguistics), speech acoustics or music, who wish to learn about the prosody of speech in general (intonation, rhythm, grouping and prominence patterns of spoken utterances), and specifically, Catalan prosody.

The data presented on this website are based on the analysis of Central Catalan, meaning that the tonal units and tonal contrasts proposed have been attested at least in the Central dialect. Yet the final aim of the Cat_ToBI labeling system is to represent a common analysis of Catalan intonation within the AM model of intonational phonology that takes into account a wide range of data coming from all of the Catalan dialectal varieties. We are currently investigating the phonological contrasts presented here through perceptual testing. We intend to include the results of this forthcoming research in the near future.

The Tutorial is to be understood as a work in progress. Suggestions are always welcome. (Contact us)
